A Nishikigoi (or Koi) is a coloured carp. Since 1820, the originally brown carp was bred in the Niigata valley (Japan). It served as nurture for the local people during the harsh winters. After an accidental crossbreeding the first coloured carps appeared. Slowly the beautiful tame colourful fish were adopted as pets, with the approval of the Japanese emperor. They were the ancestors of the Koi swimming in our ponds.

Today Koi are the symbol of Niigata in Japan and immensely popular. The Koi hobby is known in many parts of the world, including Western Europe, Australia, North America, Asia and South Africa.

In Southern Spain however, Koi aren’t well known as yet, although this is the place to enjoy most those “living jewels” all year around, because of the mild winters. Because of the bright sunshine you see more of the colourful, gracious fish. They radiate with elegance and serenity and will bring you joy and peace; they even eat out of your hand.
